Sending images

Medictyon PACS selectively uses the DICOM and HTTP protocols when sending images.

DICOM is used to interact with external systems which support it, such as image generating and radiology diagnosis stations. Medictyon PACS’s component responsible for interactions with external DICOM devices is called Medictyon Gateway and is connected to them in the local network (LAN). Medictyon Gateway is also responsible for compressing and decompressing images.

Communications between Medictyon Gateway and the persistent storage server are based on HTTPS protocol, much lighter than DICOM. For this reason, and also due to previously compressing images, Medictyon Gateway and the storage server only need a WAN connection and, moreover, it does not make great demands on bandwidth (>=256Kb).

Likewise, distributing images from the storage server to the medical stations uses HTTPS and can be done perfectly via Internet, even with ADSL connections used in homes.
